In this post, we will be sharing you 20 practical ways on how to overcome fear and experience more joy in life. The bible says sin produces fear (2 Timothy 1:7). The truth be told, there’s not one of us who hasn’t at some point in life experienced fear. So what is fear?
What Is Fear?
It’s been said that “fear not” is one of the most common phrases in the Bible. Fear, if left unchecked, can steal our joy! Fear is a thief that robs us of experiencing happiness and fulfillment. All sin is rooted in fear (1 John 4:18). Without exception, we have all at some point in our life given excuses for not trusting God because we are afraid. As a result, fear tries to control us by causing us to worry about things instead of enjoying life and living in peace with others (Proverbs 12:25; Philippians 4:6-9). We cannot find security when we’re constantly worried about everything. So how do we overcome fear in our lives?
If you feel fearful, acknowledge it right away by saying out loud “I’m afraid” or “I have fear”. But when you say it and own up to your feelings, immediately renounce it and decide not to let circumstances control you like a victim (John 10:10). Don’t get stuck feeling sorry for yourself or blaming others for causing your discomfort. We must own our fears otherwise, we will never be able to overcome them! We need to accept responsibility instead of pointing fingers at people who annoy us (Proverbs 16:18).
2. Go To God In Prayer And Ask Him To Help You Get Rid Of Your Fear
In everything we do, we should seek God’s guidance (Proverbs 3:5-6). We need the Holy Spirit to give us power over our fears by helping us put them in their proper place (Philippians 4:6-7). Oftentimes, we worry about things that never happen or things that aren’t even a big deal. So pray about it and ask God for His peace regarding a specific situation, person or circumstance. Also, ask for wisdom because He will give you wisdom if you ask for it (James 1:5-8; Matthew 7:7)!
3. Actively Listen When Someone Is Trying To Communicate With You
Sometimes fear can cause us to tune out completely and become distracted by other things, therefore failing to listen to what others are saying (Proverbs 29:11). This is especially true when we’re afraid of what someone might say or how they may react to the situation. Trust me, if you want a strong marriage, great friendships, and healthy relationships, you must be willing to listen first!
Most people don’t listen as well as they think. Most people don’t listen to all because it’s very rare that someone listens without interrupting their thinking about how to reply instead of listening patiently & attentively (James 1:19)! Don’t be those types of people.
4. Live In The Present Moment
The past cannot be changed and the future is not promised, so make the best of every situation you are currently facing (Psalm 118:24). Don’t spend your time worrying about what others have said or done to hurt you in the past or present. Instead, choose to focus on being positive for today’s special moments instead of wasting energy reliving old memories that are gone forever (Proverbs 4:25-26).
5. Stop Thinking About Yourself All Of The Time
If you want to worry less, then give more by serving others instead of being self-centered (Philippians 2:3). You can stop worrying by doing something good for someone else because service makes you feel better about yourself when it comes from the heart (Proverbs 11:25). Give your time, talents, and treasure to others.
6. Follow Your Dreams
Don’t be afraid to go after what you want because God is with you every step of the way. I believe that fear holds us back from following our dreams, goals, and passions in life. For example, if you’re not pursuing higher education because of fear then your earning potential will never expand over time (1 Corinthians 9:26; 10:33).
But when we pursue the things God has laid out for us to do in our lives, He gives us favor with others (Proverbs 3:4-5). So let’s take a leap of faith today by getting rid of our fears and trusting that all will work out for our good in the end because God is with us every step of the way!
The Bible says “do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6). When we go through tests and trials in our lives, God teaches us how strong & faithful He is (James 1:2-4)! We may feel like giving up sometimes but look for hope instead because we will surely see God’s deliverance (Psalm 42:5-6).
8. Attach Love To Everything You Do
For example, if you are afraid of public speaking, then speak words of encouragement over yourself before entering the room filled with people that are waiting on you. Remember that God gave us His Holy Spirit so that He can give us power for living in new ways today instead of just thinking about tomorrow (Galatians 5:22-23). So attach love to your feelings and actions by speaking highly about yourself & others instead of being negative all the time! Speak positive words over others while expecting great things from them in return.
9. Assess The Risk Involved When Facing Fear Head-on
For example, if you’re afraid of spiders then get closer to one & study it from a safe distance in order to see what it really looks like instead of jumping to conclusions on how it will hurt you. By facing our fears head-on, we can discover that they contain no power to hurt us because they are just as afraid of us as we are of them.
Everything in life has some risk involved, but it’s up to us to decide whether or not we take the risk or remain afraid. So do something today that will make you feel better than you did before by facing your fears head-on! (Joshua 1:9)
10. Don’t Allow Fear To Decide Your Future!
Remember that God is with us every step of the way and He has a perfect plan for everyone who loves Him (Jeremiah 29:11). When a door closes in our lives, don’t be afraid because there’s another door being opened up for new opportunities & blessings from God (Romans 8:28)!
11. Fight The Good Fight Of The Faith
Fight the good fight of the faith by living righteously every day, especially when temptation strikes you (1 Corinthians 15:57). Instead of being defeated by fear, follow God’s commandments because they are designed for our good (Deuteronomy 10:13). The more we lean on God during difficult times, the stronger & closer to Him we will become since He is always by our side (2 Kings 18:5-7)!
12. Jesus Can Make Your Fears Go Away
When facing temptation of any kind, remember that Jesus can make your fears go away if you ask Him! “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). It takes faith plus works to please God so put on your spiritual running shoes each day by getting ready for action in serving Him! By following His Word every day & doing what it says, your faith will grow stronger and you will overcome your fears (James 1:22-25).
13. Try To Exercise Each Day
Try to exercise each day by doing something physical like walking or running because it helps you to ignore fears & worries on the inside (Proverbs 17:22). Staying active keeps us healthy on the inside since we are more likely to give in to fear if we’re not taking care of ourselves physically.
Don’t be afraid of fear today but instead walk right into it by standing firm against its voice! You can do this by saying “I am ready for whatever may come my way today” & then act accordingly. Remember that God is always with you so nothing can harm you during your time of testing (Genesis 28:15; Psalm 46:1-3).
14. Don’t Allow Fear To Make Decisions For You
Don’t allow fear to make decisions for you! Instead, let your actions define who you are by acting courageously because there’s nothing to be afraid of (Jeremiah 1:8-10). God has designed us to conquer fears so we can live a victorious life through Jesus Christ (Romans 8:37-39).
Don’t just talk but work it out with action by giving fear something better than itself. This will help you stay focused on what you want in life instead of allowing fear’s voice to control your future. (Philippians 4:13).
Ask God for wisdom when facing any kind of fear in life because it’s the best way to fight back with His love in your heart (James 1:5-7). God is willing to show you how He wants you to act when walking through difficult times so ask Him for help & guidance. Faith pleases God so don’t be afraid of asking too many questions about anything that concerns your future because He will answer you (Romans 10:17).
16. Don’t Be Afraid To Give God’s Word To Others
Don’t be afraid to give God’s Word to others who need it so they can realize that their fears won’t last forever (Acts 20:24-27). People who doubt the power of God’s love in their hearts are walking around with their heads down & fearful of any type of change in their lives because they’re thinking about all the bad things that have happened to them. Instead, be a light for others to follow by showing them what you’ve learned from living a life facing & overcoming your fears!
17. Be Aware That Fear Loves Company
Be aware that fear loves company so don’t spend time with negative people who always want to complain about how hard life is (Proverbs 13:20). Fearful people will try to influence us through their doubts but we can stay strong by getting away from them as quickly as possible! Remember that God loves you so much because He has given you eternal life through Jesus Christ! This means we should show our love for Him by the way we live every day (John 3:16; 1 John 4:8-10).
18. Don’t Let Fear’s Plan For Your Life Become Your Plan
Don’t let fear’s plan for your life become your plan so you can live each day to the fullest by giving God total control of everything in it (Matthew 6:34). Fearful people will try to tell us that we’re not good enough or that God won’t help us because they don’t believe in His power. But when you think like this, you begin to give in to what fear is saying so it can control your destiny through bad habits or addictions. Remember that we need God’s help if we’re going to live a life free from fear’s control over our actions! (Romans 8:31).
19. Don’t Be Afraid Of Taking Risks
Don’t be afraid of taking risks when trying to achieve something worthwhile because doing so can make us feel more alive (Proverbs 28:1). Remember not to start something you don’t plan on finishing because it will make things worse for you (Exodus 14:13; 2 Chronicles 20:23).
Only make promises that you know you can keep because doing the opposite only causes mental stress which leads to fear. Honor your commitments because they show how much you value yourself & those around you!
20. Let Go Of Negative Thoughts
When trying to deal with fear, remember that it’s all in your head so stop feeling sorry for yourself and start acting like you believe you can do something worthwhile today because you can! “I am able to do this” (2 Corinthians 9:8).
End your day by immediately eliminating negative thoughts about fear from your mind because they aren’t true & they only give power to the enemy who wants to defeat you right now! Remember that God has a plan for everyone who commits themselves to doing good and He supplies us with the strength we need during difficult times (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12).
Finally, put all your trust in Jesus Christ as Lord & Savior by asking Him into your heart today so that He can strengthen your faith & fear no more! God is waiting with open arms to comfort you daily by loving you unconditionally as His own child (1 John 3:1-3). Fear has been defeated by Jesus so why not join Him today & be free from its grip once and for all? Amen!
