What Is Lust?
Jesus, in Matthew 5, gives a clear understanding of what lust is. Jesus describes lust as the wilful intent to lust after another person to engage in adultery.
Matthew 5:27-28 - "You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
So Jesus here speaks about lust as committing adultery already in the heart. So according to Jesus even looking at someone with a desire for sexual intercourse is considered lust.
Further down the verse, we are told of the deadly eternal effect of lust, which is hell. And so, as believers, we are warned to abstain from such intent.
Example Of Lust in the Bible
A very good example of lust in the bible is the story of Joseph and Potiphar’s wife. In Genesis 39:7, we see how Potiphar’s wife was lusting for Joseph and she wanted to have sex with him. But Joseph resisted her because he knew it was sin.
He said to her in verse 8, "Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"
We see here that Joseph spoke about lust as an act of wickedness that would be a sin against God.

1 Corinthians 6:18 – “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.”
Colossians 3:5 – “So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.”
1 Thessalonians 4:3-5 – “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God.”

For from within, out of a person’s heart, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, wickedness, deceit, lustful desires, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these vile things come from within; they are what defile you.'”

1 Corinthians 6:13 – “You say, ‘Food was made for the stomach, and the stomach for food.’ (This is true, though someday God will do away with both of them.) But you can’t say that our bodies were made for sexual immorality. They were made for the Lord, and the Lord cares about our bodies.”
Galatians 5:19-21 – “When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.”
Hebrews 13:4 – “Marriage is to be held in honor among all, and the marriage bed is to be undefiled; for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”
