In this post, we will be looking at some powerful prayers for intercessors, or prayers for intercession. Prayer is probably one of the most important weapons in an intercessor’s arsenal. An intercessor does not only stand in the gap for others, but also one who makes themselves available to God for His purposes.
What Is An Intercessory Prayer?
The following definition of intercessory prayer is from Dictionary.com: “a prayer offered on behalf of another person who is not present.” It literally means “stands between”. It is where someone prays on behalf of another person who cannot pray for themselves.
The role of an intercessor is to be the conduit through which God’s power flows. Intercession usually takes place in situations when one needs divine intervention; hence, it is a popular ministry for those filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.
Intercessory prayers are offered to God on behalf of another person. It may be spoken, sung, or read to God, and can include words of adoration, praise, thanksgiving, and/or repentance.
When you are praying for others, always remember that your primary concern should be their spiritual welfare because everything else will fall into place if they are connected to our Father through Jesus Christ. Pray with confidence knowing that God hears us even when we do not know how to pray as we should (Romans 8:26).
The Lord’s Prayer
This is probably the most well-known prayer in the Christian world. It was taught to us by Jesus Himself in Matthew 6:9-13. The prayer is known as the Lord’s Prayer because it reveals Christ’s nature and character. It was also shown to us by Jesus that this prayer must be prayed secretly rather than just recited constantly.
Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
The first reason why Satan hates intercessory prayers is that an effective intercessor will weaken his kingdom because he cannot exert his power when other spiritual forces are standing in between him and whomever he wishes to attack.
The second reason why Satan hates intercessory prayers is that it reveals who actually has dominion over a situation or circumstance. God is the one who has full dominion over the entire universe. God decides when somebody’s time is up and the devil knows this.
The third reason why he hates it is that intercessory prayers draw us closer to God. When we pray for others, our prayer helps us to develop a relationship with God. The more we pray, the more open it becomes for God to bless us because He desires that His children pray to Him daily.
The fourth reason why he hates it is that intercessory prayers reveal his limitations which only causes him to further intensify his efforts to discourage the prayers of God’s people.
The fifth reason why he hates intercessory prayers is that it provides an opportunity for believers to cooperate in prayer with one another. The more prayers being offered, the stronger we become in the Spirit. When we stand on God’s word, it forces the adversary to recognize that he has no authority over us because God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in time of trouble (Psalm 46:1).

What Are The Keys To Effective Intercessory Prayer?
1. Love God And Others (Matthew 22:36-40)
Prayer involves a loving relationship with our Heavenly Father. To pray effectively, we must maintain a heart that is in submission to Him. This not only includes praying consistently but also having a daily time of fellowship with Him in His Word and prayer. We must also maintain a loving attitude toward others. If we don’t, then our prayers will not be effective because of the lack of love that is evident in them (James 2:14-16).
2. Be Sensitive To The Holy Spirit (John 16:13; Galatians 5:18)
As believers, we are all indwelt by the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16; 6:19) who gives us wisdom (Luke 12:11) and understanding (1 Cor 2:15), reveals deep things about God (1 Corinthians 2:10), convicts us of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8).
He helps us pray through knowledge of what Scripture promises to cover areas of prayer need. When we are praying for someone, He will often quicken Scriptures to our hearts that specifically apply to our prayer. We should be open to what the Holy Spirit is saying to us through God’s Word during times of intercession.
3. Be Humble (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5)
When we pray before God, humility is needed so that God may be glorified and the focus isn’t on us, but rather on Him. We must maintain a selfless attitude as we intercede for others (Romans 15:1-2) and remember that it’s not about our abilities or gifts, but all about Jesus and what He has done!
4. Be Committed (Act 18:9; 2 Corinthians 4:1-2)
God will not hear someone who is half-hearted or lukewarm in their faith (Revelation 3:15-16). He desires that we pursue Him with all of our heart, mind, soul, and strength. When we are interceding for others, it requires 100% commitment to see the person’s needs met.
5. Be Obedient (Ecclesiastes 8:2; James 5:16b & 2 Timothy 2:19)
We must remember that the goal of prayer is obedience to God’s Word. If a Scriptural command is given to us about something we’re praying for then we must obey if we want answered prayer from the Lord (James 4:2 & 4-8).

What Are The Duties Of An Intercessor?
The duty of the intercessor is to stand as a representative for those who cannot pray. Intercession can be defined as bringing one’s requests and prayers before God and pleading with Him on behalf of other people (Genesis 20:7; 1 Kings 8:44-48; Psalm 106:23).
An intercessor has the privilege of approaching God at any time on behalf of others. An intercessor should have confidence in approaching God, knowing that God will respond when he prays for another person (1 John 5:14,15).
As you pray these intercessory prayers, take heart because “greater is He who is in you, than He who is in the world” (1 John 4:4b).
How Do You Pray An Intercession Prayer?
Intercessory prayers are powerful prayers. It is helpful to know some tips on how to pray an effective powerful intercessory prayer, or how to be a prayer intercessor especially when fighting spiritual warfare.
A good rule of thumb in praying for others is to ask God for specific things, not general requests. When you are praying specifically about someone else’s life, don’t be afraid to speak directly with God about them.
Don’t forget to pray for yourself as well! In praying for others, you are building a relationship with God. He will be more likely to show His love and blessings in your own life as well.
Talk to Him about how you feel and thank Him for what He is already doing in your life.
Thank Him for the blessings He has given you in the past and thank Him for what He is going to do. God loves it when we talk directly to Him about our life!
Thank Him for His care over you, knowing that He will help you through all things if you ask in prayer.
How Do You End A Prayer Of Intercession?
The last sentences in a prayer of intercession should be about the person you are praying for. In these closing words, believe that God will answer your request and make things better for the person you are praying for.
You can say something like “In Jesus’ name, Amen.” or “With God’s help, this is going to turn out the way we have prayed. Thank you for your faithfulness, God!” or “I know that with You on their side, they will be victorious.” or “Let Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
What is the difference between prayer and intercessory prayer?
Prayer is expressing to God what is on one’s heart. Intercessory prayer involves a person going before the Lord on behalf of another, bringing needs and requests before God. Often this is done in conjunction with other believers who have a burden for that person or situation.
